ISRAEL UPDATEDecember 23, 2001 – On October 3, 1972, the USSR and the United States signed a treaty to reduce the proliferation of nuclear arms and make the world a safer place.
By October of 1973, these same two superpowers stood on the verge of a nuclear war, as Israel fought a war for survival with her Arab neighbors.
The period of 1973 to 1993 saw arms sales reach a staggering total of almost one trillion U.S. dollars, with 92% of these sales going to unstable Middle Eastern regimes.
In 1982, Arafat’s PLO had enough weapons stockpiled in the country of Lebanon for a 500,000 man army, yet he received a standing ovation in the U.N. for discussing unity.
It was also during this time a huge multinational coalition fought Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War of 1990-1991, but still the arms sales soared.
In 1993, the U.S., Israel, and the Arab nations of the world gave Arafat’s “security forces” enough weapons for a small army, to complement the Peace Accords.
I watch this insanity at this time of year, as we are celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace, realizing that any moment the sleepy little town of Bethlehem could erupt into an inferno of death and destruction.
The prophetess Anna and the wise ruler Simeon both realized they had seen the Salvation of Israel in that young child. Luke 2:29 and 2:38
How we yearn for the Prince of Peace to return and establish a real lasting peace, of which there will be no end – and no treaties…
December 23, 2001 – Yassir Arafat’s situation grows bleaker and more desperate everyday – as his health fails him, world opinion shifts, and the U.S. and Britain are growing weary of his rhetoric.
In his precarious condition, he could denounce all of the nations that sponsor terrorism, but he would lose their financial and logistical support.
He could call on Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the DFLP, PFLP, and Hizballah to stop their terrorist activities, but they would only laugh, since he has encouraged and allowed them to operate without restriction.
Perhaps he could go to the Israelis to apologize and ask for the more than generous offer made during the Baruk administration, but it is doubtful that the current Prime Minister would be feeling very generous, even though it is the Holiday Season.
Arafat could conceivably have a leader of another terror group assassinated as a sign of good faith to the West, but he still hasn’t been tried for killing the U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan and his assistant, back in 1974. So that is not the best move for him, either.
Rest assured, this wily old chief of murders has learned not only how to survive and use the media to his advantage, but now he must move quickly, as time is running out.
We can say with confidence, any or all of the above stated options will draw the nations of the world to war – all in the name of peace and nationalism.
To be continued…
